...and above it all

I've long been an admirer of the street artist 'ABOVE' and have followed his world 'tours' with an avid eye. As street artists are regarded more as trying to engage and question the public with a social message, they are often overlooked as vandals and enemies of society and seen more as the artists anarchist, the acceptable expression of self and identity. This of course is almost completely acceptable in today's society as the much larger stigma against the 'graffiti' artist still remains. That thin hypocritical line.

So, in saying this, one of the reasons I enjoy ABOVE's work is his diversity, both his ability to create MASSIVE eye assaulting works as well as his creation of more subtle works. ABOVE can get in your grill and let you know about it or he can hang in the back of your head and let you stew on some purposely provoked thought. He uses his sign language and arrow pieces to express his messages as a form of visual communication, bold pieces spanning entire buildings, pieces that fill that void between appreciating art and making the hamster on the wheel run just that little bit harder.

Check out a fresh show he (very) recently collab'd with Blek le Rat at White Walls.

Enjoy.
This is ABOVE.
